Business Name Authorization
To register your firm in Nevada, you must have a Nevada state business license. But if the name of your firm includes the word “engineer”, you must first obtain a Business Name Authorization from this board.
“Engineer” is a protected term in Nevada. (NRS 625.520)
If your firm name includes engineer or any derivative of engineer, you must submit a Business Name Authorization Request to receive authorization to use “engineer” in your business entity name.
We will review your request and—if approved—issue an authorization letter which you must provide to the Nevada Secretary of State when applying for your Nevada state business license.
Once you have obtained your Nevada state business license, you may register your firm.
Non-engineering firms
If your firm does NOT intend to offer engineering services in Nevada but includes the word “engineer” in the name, you may request an exemption. To do so, you must also create a profile and submit a Business Name Authorization Request. If approved, you will be issued an exemption letter which you must also provide to the Nevada Secretary of State when applying for you Nevada state business license.
