Railroad Grants Seminar

Presented by NALS Southern Chapter

August 6, 2022 @ 8:00 am 12:00 pm

Since the inception of the locomotive, railroads have been an integral part of the transportation of passengers and the shipment of freight in America, carving a circuitous footprint across the landscape. Early locomotive design, with its inherent physical limitations, was a primary determining factor in the alignment for rail corridors, the frequency of stations, need for water storage tanks and other appurtenances, the location of maintenance facilities, and additional lands required for excavation in order to maintain suitable slope.

All too often, when Land Surveyors are called upon regarding a railroad interest, problems begin to emerge, such as enabling legislation, determining the extents of the interest, access to critical boundary information, whether the interest has passed in successorship, and determining current status of the interest. This workshop is intended for all experience levels and will cover the following:

➢ How limitations of early locomotive technology influenced the need for additional lands
➢ Information available for identifying railroad corridors and appurtenant lands
➢ Enabling legislation initially creating the grant
➢ The specific requirements of the grant and the extents of the lands granted
➢ Various stages of use/non-use: Active, Inactive, Dismantled, Obliterated, Abandoned
➢ Conclusion
➢ Q&A
